The stories are full of details including the struggles to be apart from overseas family. It also talks about the relationships between the father and the son, and the mother and the daughter in law. I like the stories about Siu Sang, who came to Vancouver to marry Pon Man, and finally raised 5 daughters for the family.Product details

I was unsure of this novel at first, but I enjoyed it more and more as I continued to read. By the end, I found that I was satisfied, and that I had enjoyed the time I spent reading.
The relationships between the characters are bittersweet, shaded with self-sacrifice, family responsibility, cultural divides, misunderstandings, prejudice and ultimately, love. As is life.
It was a quick read- it would be a good book to take along on a trip.
The 256 pages of this novel provide such depths and insight into each character, the lives and toils of a family, and the conflicts that we all face, more or less, at some point within our lives. It's rare for a novel to provoke such contemplation and emotions within the reader, but The End of East manages to do so effortlessly and throughout its entirety. Get the tissues ready, and be prepared to look at your own existence -- I know I did.
It was interesting to get the perspective of the Asian immigrant, however there were lots of rather mundane details that added nothing to the story or the plot.
Reading about immigration and cultures different from mine is always a carrot in front of my reading selection nose, and this book does that, giving insight into the Chinese immigration movement specific to Vancouver, B.C. That in itself would lead me to recommend this book. My reluctance to whole heartedly recommending it is in the lack of empathy/sympathy that I developed for any of the characters. This is fiction after all; involve me on an emotional level. Flashbacks from the book's present to past seems a bit clumsy and might be off-putting to those who like a "clean" tale.
